British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
