Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials reported that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
