The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team is likely building a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
