Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
